How Long Does It Take To Buy A Mattress?

January 24th, 2008 . by The Linen Doctor

So Many Options

The number of choices and manufacturers in mattresses available today is overwhelming. There are new constructions and materials:  natural latex foam (like the Royal-Pedic we carry at the Scheuer Linens store), air chamber mattresses (such as Select Comfort), and visco-elastic foam (commonly called memory foam). Add to that the various thicknesses and pillow tops that are available and it’s no wonder it’s so tough to decide.

Try Before you Buy

There really is no substitute for actually physically trying a mattress. Most sleep experts say that you should test a mattress for 15-20 minutes each.  If you experience any uncomfortable pressure points, consider another mattress.

Keep in mind that older bodies tolerate less pressure as they age. Try to use the same position that you normally sleep in and use a pillow that is similar to the one you use. You might even consider bringing your own pillow. If you are a side sleeper, like most of us are, be sure to spend time on each side. We might also recommend testing mattresses when the store opens so you won’t feel as self-conscious about testing a bed in a store for 15-20 minutes.

Comfort Counts!

The trend today is for comfort and luxury, resulting in thicker mattresses and pillow top cushioning. However, most of the cushioning used today is polyurethane, which comes in different densities and can easily compress with use to create body impressions.

Most warranties state that body impressions up to 1.5” deep are normal and not cause for complaint or replacement. While it may be normal, it may not be so comfortable, and many people complain. A latex mattress does not create body impressions and is therefore the better material, but it costs 10-20 times what polyurethane costs.

Check the Warranty

Also make sure you understand the warranty. Some mattresses are prorated like tires and you will only get a certain percentage of the purchase price back, based on how long you have owned it. Some are non-pro rated, meaning you will get the full purchase price back.

Check to make sure you know what costs, if any, are involved in a return or exchange, including transportation of the mattress and/or restocking fees.  Comfort guarantees are important and usually allow you to return or exchange a bed within a certain number of days, but these guarantees vary from store to store.

Take Your Time

All of this research also takes time and can often be done before you even walk into the store or at any time during your interaction with the salesperson. But figure on 15-20 minutes per bed. If you want to test three beds, figure 45-60 minutes total. Regardless of how long you decide to spend researching and testing, take your time in deciding and consider going back for a second testing once you have made up your mind.

That old cliché about spending one-third of your life in bed is true, so whatever time you spend choosing a new mattress is a great investment in both your health and your happiness.
